Gülcemal Kadınefendi () (or Gül-Cemâl Kadınefendi) ( 1826 – 16 November 1851〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Turkey: The Imperial House of Osman )〕)(''Gülcemal, Gül-Cemâl'' meaning "Rose faced") was the wife of 31st Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I. She was the mother of Fatma Sultan, Hadice Sultan, Refia Sultan, Rukiye Sultan and Sultan Mehmed V of the Ottoman Empire. Her rank in the imperial harem was "Dördüncü Kadın Efendi" (literally "fourth woman", i.e. "fourth imperial lady consort").〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Consorts Of Ottoman Sultans (in Turkish) )〕 ==Biography== Gülcemal Kadınefendi was born in 1826 and was from Albanian descent. Her real name was Sofia. At a very young age she was given to the palace for service. During her service Abdülmecid took notice of Gülcemal and they married in 1840 in the Topkapı Palace. She gave birth to five children, including Mehmed V. Two of her children died in infancy and the surviving three of them were adopted by, Servetsezâ Kadınefendi, one of Abdülmecid's wives. She died on 16 November 1851 or 29 December 1895 in Ortaköy, Constantinople/Istanbul〔Finkel, Caroline, ''Osman's Dream'', (Basic Books, 2005), 57; "Istanbul was only adopted as the city's official name in 1930..".〕 However, she was never Valide Sultan to her son, because she died before Mehmed Reşad's accession to the Ottoman throne.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 Sultan V.
